Biography: Having set up the first undergraduate module in evolutionary psychology in the UK I have been involved in the development and dissemination of the field for the past 30 years. My evolutionary psychology textbook with Will Reader continues to sell well around the world and is about to go into a 4th edition. I have been involved in exploring Darwin’s’ influence on the development of modern psychology through my book on him and via various talks and articles. My own research includes the evolution and development of lateralized patterns of response in humans and birds. I have also conducted research into the relationship between eye pigmentation and levels of seasonal affective disorder, suggesting that blue eye colouration arose as an adaptive response to living in northern latitudes where the winter photoperiod is greatly reduced when compared to our equatorial living Pleistocene ancestors. In recent years I have developed an interest in aspects of criminal behaviour, conducting research with Sandie Taylor in this area.
Research areas: Evolutionary psychology; lateralization; SAD; criminal behaviour; influence of Darwin.
